Pre-amalgamation of Toronto, North York Council on Aging took the initiative to draw together seniors from Metropolitan Toronto’s other municipalities in order to develop an independent organization to represent and work on behalf of seniors in the new City of Toronto. Toronto Seniors Council was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1999; in 2012 the name was changed to Toronto Council on Aging (TCA). In May 2014, the Canadian Revenue Agency granted the TCA charitable status.
The Council has developed and delivered numerous of successful programs. These include:
- Annual forums on a variety of topics
- Friendly to Seniors workshops, delivered by senior volunteers, for staff of organizations and businesses
- Site Assessments for Safety and Accessibility
- Workshops and programs for older adults
