Tax Series for Seniors with Canada Revenue Agency – Information for Persons with Disabilities and their Caregivers

This virtual presentation will include an overview of the Disability Tax Credit, eligibility and the application process. Topics will also include common benefits, tax credits and deductions for persons with disabilities.

BACKGROUND OF PRESENTER:

Janika Bounma is a CVITP and Benefits Outreach Officer with the Canada Revenue Agency. Prior to joining CRA’s Outreach program, Janika has obtained many years of outreach experience through volunteering with the Boys and Girls Club of Jane and Finch and the Nike Community Ambassador program. As part of the outreach initiative, Janika partners with non-profit organizations across the region who provide services to many different segments of the population. The partnerships allow Janika to provide tax information, raise awareness and answer any questions their clients and employees may have. The goal is to promote financial literacy and empowerment to all Canadians through CRA’s Outreach Program.

BACKGROUND OF PRESENTER:

Mary Shkoury, Prevention Consultant

Mary has been working in Health and Wellness sectors for the last 15 years with a Focus on Seniors Health and Safety. She Graduated from York University with a Specialized Honors BA in Sociology and completed her studies in Gerontology through Queens University.

Her passion and commitment to caring for Canadian Seniors rights has lead her to her role with Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario, where her mission is to see our province continue to be a safe place for our seniors to live, be heard and be free from Elder Abuse.

ELDER ABUSE PREVENTION ONTARIO:

Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario is a provincial, charitable, non-profit organization focused on supporting the implementation of The Ontario Strategy to Combat Elder Abuse and has been doing so since 2002.

The framework of the Strategy focuses on service coordination, building local capacity of front-line workers, caregivers, and community networks, by providing public education and training of professionals/service providers and families of seniors, to raise awareness around elder abuse issues.

Apps (applications) are a type of software that you can run on your computer, tablet, or smartphone. They allow you to play games, organize your life, manage your health, use social media, and more. In this session we will learn how to find and download apps, and we will tour some fun and useful apps that are available for free.

You will need:

– Device 1: access to a computer, laptop or tablet to participate online

- Device 2: smart phone, iphone, or tablet to access Apps

- Basic computer skills

- Beginner levels
